ZPF a new SEGA Genesis Game fully funded on Kickstarter in first 19 minutes

If you were wondering if new games for retroconsoles like SEGA Genesis were in demand, the answer is a resounding yes, as evidenced by this Kickstarter for ZPF (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/megacatstudios/zpf-a-new-sega-mega-drive-genesis-game/description) a horizontal shmup in development that reached funding goal in the first 19 minutes it was posted and as of this writing has amassed over $87,000.

Those that pledge at least $50 USD will receive the physical cart which is they are predicting to be done at some point in 2025.

How is this being developed? Also answered in the Kickstarter:

The game is powered by SGDK, a C library for game development on the Mega Drive / Genesis. Library is made by Stephane Dallongeville.

Neat! If I didn’t pledge for the RPG of TMNT (see: Kickstarter for Re-Release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1985 RPG Meets Goal 4 Hours After Release), I’m probably not pledging here, but am interested to see how this turns out and if it launches in 2025 as planned. Also, think it’s great for retrogaming to see new physical game releases. Releases like these help remind people of how much fun playing some of the older consoles still can be.

  1. hi Todd!

The game looks prtty underwhelming compared to the many horizontal shumps we already have on Irrcade and Steam. Unless it’s deeply discounted when it launches on Steam with some online coop and leaderboards at least, a hard pass from me.

    1. Not sure that this is coming to Steam(?). It’s a Sega Genesis physical cartridge. The Kickstarter doesn’t say anything about Steam as far as I can tell? Do you have a link or anything for Steam release?
