With 270,000+ games, Gamers are hopelessly outnumbered + National Card Playing Day

Moby Games (https://www.mobygames.com/) has been keeping track of games for quite some time now. They don’t track every type of game — like probably not all mobile, indie games and Steam games, mainly published games. Still, they are saying there are over 270,000 games tracked in their database alone.

This got me thinking about how many games we’ll never be able to play in a lifetime. Even if you lived to 105 and played a different game every day for 100 years, that math is sobering:

100 years x 365 days =36,500 games!

Now, if you played 7 different games every day for 100 years, you’d be able to get there … but that’s only the existing games, not the new ones that will be created over the next 100 years.

Bottom line: no gamer can play even close to everything. There are so many bad, bad games, that if we say, hey, I just want in my lifetime to play the best games, the games I really like in the genres I most enjoy. Yeah, that’s probably a little more realistic.

For example, one of my most favorite genres are classic arcade games from the 70s, 80s and 90s. How many arcade games are there? Not that many, really, compared to all different types of games.

This is a game category I intend to continue focusing on in whatever time left living on this great earth. We do this at PGM through our seasonal Score Chasing games, see this category: https://playgamesmore.com/category/score-chase/

Also, let’s not forget today is a holiday: December 28 – National Card Playing Day

What about you? What games do you enjoy playing? What categories/genres are you interested in?

Spread the love

  1. I really enjoyed score chasing arcade games with the PGM community. There is a lot I haven’t played, and it’s been really cool to learn about them, and also playing the ones I really enjoy in local arcades. Platforming is another genre that I really like. This holiday we picked up Astro Bot for the PS5, and it has been amazing so far. PlayStation really needed a title like this, and they delivered. RPGs are also something I really enjoy. I haven’t been playing many over the last few years, but in 2025 I’m going to pick a few from the backlog to complete.
