Michael Bay to direct live action movie based on SEGA Outrun

By Todd Russell May 8, 2025

Michael Bay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bay_filmography) has a long history of action movies, notably the Transformers series, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys, and my personal favorite of his: The Rock, is apparently tackling a movie project based on the SEGA arcade game Outrun.

The project is very early and, thus, could end up never actually seeing the light of day, but movies based on games are gaining traction with moviegoers lately and some of them have been surprisingly, refreshingly worth watching.

“Bay will also produce alongside partner Brad Fuller through their Platinum Dunes banner, which has a first-look deal with the studio. The project is in development; as of right now, Sweeney is only on board to produce. Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3KnucklesGolden Axe) will also produce for Sega and Shuji Utsumi (president/COO of Sega Corp.) will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.” – Sydney Sweeney And Michael Bay Team On ‘Outrun’ Movie At Universal

We score chased Outrun earlier this year (Season 3 Week 26: Outrun – How to Join Us, Play, Beat Your Personal Best)

Going back to Michael Bay’s 1996 The Rock, how about a game based on that?

Seriously, the movie follows a path that would translate to a cool action game. Skulking around in the bowels of Alcatraz, doing battle with mercs, trying to disable lethal chemical weapons. Yeah, this has 2025 modern videogame plot written all over it.

Other games to movies or streaming that we’ve covered at PGM include: Feeling Blocky? Play free Minecraft alternatives + (NO SPOILER) review of A Minecraft Movie, Knuckles Spin-off Series at Paramount+ Ready To Watch April 26, 2024 and Dragon’s Lair Live Action Movie on Netflix Still Under Development.

Personally, I’m looking more forward to that Dragon’s Lair Netflix project than a Michael Bay Outrun, which will probably be some sort of Fast and Furious like movie with way too much flash and little substance. Maybe since Sega has somebody involved it will be more like Sonic or Mario movie adaptations, both of those have been promising.

Wonder what the chance Jack Black ends up in this somehow? Seems like he’s more than happy to pen songs for games made into movies.

Doubtful. We’ll keep a look in the PGM rearview mirror for a Michael Bay helmed Outrun. Are you interested in an Outrun live action movie? Lets us know in the comments.
