How long has Rockstar really been working on Grand Theft Auto VI?

By Todd Russell May 13, 2025

Today, I’m attending a two-day management training class. You bet I’m bringing some games to play. One game none of us can play yet is Grand Theft Auto VI.

We last checked in on the release status of GTA VI in 2023 (A former Rockstar employee finally reveals why GTA VI is taking forever, and it might be your favorite game’s fault), believing it would come out at some point in 2025, but most have heard by now that Rockstar has pushed the release back to May 26, 2026. Will it be delayed again? Don’t know.

Here’s the most current official GTA VI trailer #2:

Trailer videos are rarely reliable for how fun a game is going to be, but this one does look promising, doesn’t it?

Decided to do some digging to see what this development delay is all about.

“[David O’Reilly, former Rockstar employee] also revealed that development only started after they wrapped up one of the most well-known games of all time, Red Dead Redemption 2. O’Reily’s statement debunks many rumors and reports that previously suggested the game’s development began in 2014, a year after GTA V’s release. If development had indeed begun in 2014, it would mean Rockstar had been working on the game for over a decade. Though there were likely other factors that slowed them down, like the Covid-19 pandemic, a decade was still a long time. However, given that development only began in 2018, and it’s been seven years since then, the timeline suddenly feels a lot more reasonable, especially for a title as massive and ambitious as GTA VI.” – A former Rockstar employee finally reveals why GTA VI is taking forever, and it might be your favorite game’s fault

So, blame for their other popular franchise sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 for the delay? Sounds plausible. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great game, btw.

Seems like they are moving around resources to whatever is next up and now that’s GTA VI. This should mean no more delays, or so we might think.
