Kinect, Wii Fit, there have been many game devices that use us as the controller. Motion control is neither new, fresh or innovative, but it’s what a game console released in 2024 called Nex Playground (https://www.nexplayground.com/) does. It seems to be targeting a 3-8 year old demographic, a bit too young for our grandchildren, but it promises something else for older children and adults: mobility. In fact, reading the reviews reveals games that do appeal to older audiences.

As of this writing there are 792 reviews at Amazon (4.6 out of 5 stars) including helpful, informative ones like the following:

I’m a little put off that the only way, it seems, to get beyond the five games it comes with is to buy a game pass that use the tired rental game model. It’s $89/year, which isn’t a horrible price, but not great either, and they promise to add 20 new games a year. If there are 4-5 good games for that price and there is 100 hours or so of play time, that could bring value here, but this top critical review nails my inner concerns:

Another reason has me interested in this console. The fact that it’s getting the kids, and adults, more active with gaming. I’ve made purchases like this many times before and, unfortunately, they always have ended badly (not using them after the initial excitement). So, why do it again? It’s the promise of playing games that make us more active, more healthy, exercise most folks need to stay in shape.
