Summer is over and we’re kicking off Season 2 of Score Chasing tomorrow, Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 12:00:01 PST (GMT-8). What does this mean? 35 games over the next 36 weeks (one game we’re featuring for two weeks: Robotron: 2084, my personal favorite classic arcade game of all time). Season 2, week 1, or simply S2wk1 for short, we’re featuring the Atari classic: Astorids Deluxe, the arcade version. This article will tell you everything you need to know about how to join our group and play Asteroids Deluxe.
PLEASE NOTE: this score chasing event is for adults, age 18 and older, so if you aren’t yet 18, then please return when you are.
First, let’s learn more about Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade). A little history, via Arcade History:
“The original “Asteroids” proved to be wildly popular, but there was one problem. The game was simply too easy for expert players (many people could play for hours on a single quarter). So Atari decided to make a more difficult sequel, Asteroids Deluxe. They succeeded a little too well, and had to scale the difficulty back after their initial version proved to be too difficult for the average player. This game was created out of modified “Asteroids” code. At the same time this game was being produced, “Space Duel” was in the works, but was shelved as Asteroids Deluxe was green-lighted for production. Despite its similarities to the hugely popular original, Asteroids Deluxe was a commercial flop and Atari later released “Space Duel” to moderate success.”

Where can you play Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade)? Here are a few suggestions (alphabetical order) but is not a complete list by any means:
- Antstream Arcade is a cloud based streaming game service that has over 1300 licensed games, including Asteroids Deluxe arcade version (direct link to game in browser). Note: a monthly or yearly subscription to this service is required, pricing varies. Our PGM group also plays/sends Antstream challenges to other members on various games on this service. - Arcade – yes, check your local area for barcaes, arcades, mallcades, etc. You might have an Asteroids Deluxe arcade machine nearby and play might still be a quarter!
- Arcade1Up Asteroids Machines – various Arcade1up machines come with Asteroids Deluxe, includig 3/4 scale Asteroids 6-in-1, Asteroids Partycade, and so on. If you o or a friend/family member owns one of these, give it a play
- Atgames Legends Home Arcade Machines: Atgames Legends Ultimate comes with a licensed version of Asteroids Deluxe (see ALU full games list)
- Atari VCS 800 – Atari Vault, included with the purchase of the Atari VCS 800 has the arcade version of Asteroids Deluxe (list of all Atari Vault included games via Wikipedia)
- Nintendo Switch – Atari 50th Anniversary includes 100+ games, including the arcade version of Asteroids Deluxe ($39.99, price varies, store link)
- PlayStation (PS5,4,3,2,1) all versions have had some version of Asteroids. The Atari 50th Anniversary edition is the most recent collection including Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade) – store link
- Steam / Steam Deck / PC – Atari 50th Anniversary ($39.99, prices vary, store link)
- Various Emulated / MAME / CoinOpsX / etc – emulated versions of Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade) are allowed, but we do not typically link to these sources
- Xbox Series S/X – Asteroids Deluxe ($4.99, price varies, Xbox store), Atari 50th Anniversary Edition ($39.99, price varies, over 100 games including Asteroids Deluxe, store link)
Now that you have located where to play Asteroids Deluxe, simply start playing to establish your personal best score. The goal of score chasing is not a typical leaderboard high score, be the top score tournament. We simply want you to play and beat your personal best.
