If you’re in the market for a stunning OLED 4K TV, here’s the tech buzzword you need to know: quantum dots. Yes, quantum dots are something making some high end OLED TVs another scale of amazing. Those quantum dots are so amazing, in fact, that a Nobel Prize has been awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov for “their discovery and development of quantum dots,” via This TV breakthrough just won the Nobel Prize — and these OLED TVs have it now:
Currently, some TVs use what is called a quantum dot filter where light is passed through a display layer of quantum dots This filter then reproduces the color based on the width of the dot. A quantum dot that is seven nanometers wide converts light into red, a five-nanometer dot converts light into green and a dot that is three nanometers in width converts the light into a blue light.
How to know if the high end OLED 4K TV has quantum dots in it? Look specifically for QD-OLED TVs. The two TVs mentioned that have this are the Samsung S95C with 55″ model starting around $1,849 USD and the Sony Bravia XR A95K that starts around $2,479 for 55″. Sony has another, newer QD-OLED, the Sony Bravia XR A95L, but the article linked did not have any pricing mentioned. One can only expect it to be above $2,500, probalby $3,000+ for 55″.
This author currently uses a Sony Bravia OLED 4K 120hz TV for main gaming monitor and absolutely, positively loves it. Not a quantum dot version, unfortunately, but hey, there is new better, faster, clearer tech coming out all the time.
